2011 Chesapeake Bay Annual Buyboat Reunion and 8th Annual Homecoming.
The Down the Bay cruise will start at Tangier Island, VA on Tuesday 02 August and depart on Thursday the 4th of August for Cape Charles, Virginia. Cape Charles will host the 2011 reunion in this unique town near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The oyster buyboats will be open for the public to come aboard and touch a part of history. Join us pierside at the Cape Charles Town Harbor.
These unique craft that were used to haul seafood and cargo using the Chesapeake Bay waterways before many of the peninsulas were connected by bridges. As the seafood harvest declined and highways became the mode of travel the large graceful buyboats faded from local waters. There are, perhaps, not more than 30 of the oyster buyboats remaining on the Chesapeake Bay.
On Friday thru Sunday, August 5th - 7th the 2011 reunion is in Cape Charles, Virginia. Cape Charles will host the 2011 Chesapeake Bay Buyboat Associations reunion at the Cape Charles Town Harbor.
The Chesapeake Bay Buyboat Association is comprised of owners and people who share the love of these big boats. The owners maintain and operate the remaining buyboats at their own expense. The owners bring their boats to ports around the Chesapeake Bay each summer so that the public can stand on the decks, touch them and understand their importance in history.
We will end the 2011 cruise in Urbanna, Virginia for our 8th annual homecoming on August 11th - 14th.
